Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. EMDR focuses on reconnecting a person with the emotions, images, physical sensations, and beliefs associated with trauma that may have become “stuck,” disrupting emotional well-being and the brain’s natural ability to heal.
In a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, individuals are guided through the reprocessing of distressing memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming and disruptive. EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) to support the brain’s adaptive information processing system, helping traumatic experiences become more fully integrated and reducing their emotional intensity. This process supports healing by promoting greater emotional regulation, resilience, and overall functioning.
EMDR is conducted through an eight-phase treatment approach designed to identify, process, and resolve distressing memories and the beliefs, emotions, and body sensations connected to them. Treatment is individualized and paced according to each person’s readiness and clinical needs.
EMDR has demonstrated effectiveness for individuals struggling with trauma and trauma-related symptoms, as well as concerns such as anxiety, panic attacks, dissociation, eating disorders, addiction, and other mental health conditions in which unresolved experiences may contribute to ongoing distress. EMDR may also be beneficial for individuals experiencing negative core beliefs, emotional dysregulation, or symptoms associated with adverse life experiences.
